Safely dispose of unneeded prescription and over-the-counter medications, including those prescribed by veterinarians, during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 24 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
As part of the Drug Enforcement Agency's National Drug Take Back Day, the Alexandria Police Department, Alexandria Sheriff's Office, and Alexandria Health Department, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria, are staffing multiple drop-off locations for safe medication disposal.
Drop off unused or expired medication from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the following locations:
- Alexandria Police Headquarters (3600 Wheeler Ave.) - Alexandria Fire Station 210 (5255 Eisenhower Ave.) - The Neighborhood Pharmacy of Del Ray (2204 Mt. Vernon Ave.) - Walgreens Pharmacy (3614 King St.)
No needles are accepted at these sites.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Studies show that the majority of misused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of unused medication, often flushing it down the toilet or throwing it away - both potential safety and health hazards.
Drug take back days and permanent drop boxes also support the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and economically productive lives, while reducing their impact on the environment.
The service is free and anonymous; no questions asked.
