Proving Up
WTAMU Opera presents an unsettling, dreamlike chamber opera by composer Missy Mazzoli and librettist Royce Vavrek, adapted from a short story by Karen Russell. Set on the harsh Nebraska plains in the 1870s, the story follows the Zegner family as they work to secure their homestead through strict requirements that include a sod house, five years of harvest, and the surprising necessity of a single glass window. With the eldest son unable to help, young Miles sets out on a risky journey to share that lone window with distant neighbors awaiting an inspector, encountering old sorrows and a menacing figure known as the Sodbuster as the line between reality and nightmare blurs. Praised by The Washington Post and The New York Times, this contemporary piece is performed by students of the WTAMU Opera program in an intimate setting that heightens its eerie mood and emotional impact at Mary Moody Northen Hall.
