AND 8:00 P.M. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF ASHEVILLE Darko Butorac , conductor Joseph Conyers, double bass There is a serene kind of beauty found only at twilight, when the landscape cedes to legend; this program lingers in these wild places at their most untamed and fragile.
Anna Clyne’s stormy nocturne gathers “every shred of the luminous past” like “a naked woman running mad through the pure night.” Tan Dun’s spiritually cinematic Wolf Totem summons the mythical Mongolian wolf from the grasslands. Sibelius’s devastating Fifth conjures the inscrutable patterns of the aurora.
Three works that find beauty in loss, solace in vast spaces, and mystery in the gathering dark. Clyne: This Midnight Hour Tan: Contrabass Concerto: Wolf Totem Sibelius: Symphony No. 5
