About Distracted We live in a time when our thumbs know more than our minds. We scroll past each other’s joy and grief before breakfast, absorb a day’s worth of tragedy by lunch, and still convince ourselves that the next notification might be the dopamine hit that’ll make us feel better.
As much as some of us complain about smartphones, distraction is the air we breathe. Social media, surveillance, endless updates and countless opinions all pile up until focus feels like a luxury item.
For Thundercat, the clutter isn’t abstract. On Distracted , his long-awaited fifth studio album, it’s the central theme of his life and art right now.
When asked about the album’s title, he put it simply: if you have Instagram, you already know exactly what he means. Thundercat doesn’t frame distraction as a buzzword or diagnosis.
He treats it as something omnipresent, something you deal with whether you like it or not. Distracted arrives six years after It Is What It Is , an album shaped by grief, romantic heartbreak, and the loss of friend and collaborator Mac Miller.
If that record felt like a long exhale after trauma, this one feels like the restless pacing that follows. Rather than treating Distracted as a sharp turn, Thundercat sees it as continuation.
The heartbreak never really stopped; it just changed shape. If it isn’t a girl, it’s taxes.
If it isn’t taxes, it’s World War III. If it isn’t World War III, it’s a new update to the phone.
That bleak-but-funny cadence has always been part of his voice. What’s different now is the scale of what he’s responding to.
Born Stephen Bruner in Los Angeles, Thundercat came up in a lineage built on musicianship and discipline. His father was a drummer, and his brother Ronald Bruner Jr. has played with artists ranging from Kamasi Washington to Snoop Dogg.
Before Thundercat sang about love, lust, or loneliness, he learned how to listen, how to sit inside rhythm, and how to play with intention. A stint with Suicidal Tendencies sharpened his structure while widening his sonic palette.
Albums like The Golden Age of Apocalypse and Apocalypse introduced a vulnerable artist, but 2017’s Drunk crystallized Thundercat as a singular voice. Fresh off a major role on Kendrick Lamar’s landmark To Pimp a Butterfly , the emotional whiplash of Drunk mirrored the fragmented way people consume music and life in the digital age.
It Is What It Is slowed that pace down and made room for grief. Distracted lives somewhere between those poles.
Thundercat insists the album wasn’t about chasing a specific sound so much as enjoying the process. That openness shines throughout the record.
Songs move from layered Brit-pop influence to late-night dance-floor energy, with producer Greg Kurstin helping shape something new without forcing it. The creative throughline was not being afraid of the unknown.
That openness also extends to the album’s collaborators. Features from Willow, A$AP Rocky, Lil Yachty, and the late Mac Miller feel less like crossovers and more like conversations already in progress.
The songs move through tenderness, humor, and emotional gravity without losing their weirdness or warmth. The titles alone tell a story: I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time , You Left Without Saying Goodbye , She Knows Too Much .
They read like internal monologues that surface at 3 a.m. when the phone is finally face down. Thundercat doesn’t over-explain them.
He just calls them human sentiments, and that restraint is part of what gives the album its power. Distracted captures the tension between overstimulation and introspection.
Thundercat is skeptical of technological progress, especially the way it narrows our imagination instead of expanding it. The disappointment isn’t just about gadgets.
It’s about what we were promised versus what we got. Still, distraction isn’t always bad.
Thundercat compares it to a doctor waving a toy in front of a child before a shot. Sometimes distraction helps soften the pain.
Sometimes you need it to focus in a different way. That idea runs through the album and through his live show approach, where playfulness becomes part of the resistance.
