Public Reception: Chellis Baird | Garden of Athletes
Please join us for the public reception celebrating our current Art in the Spotlight artist, Chellis Baird! This event is free and open to the public.
Garden of Athletes expands the artist‘s exploration of dance from the notation of steps into the expression of energy itself. Inspired by George Balanchine‘s comparison of a ballet company to a garden, with each dancer a distinct flower contributing to a greater whole, Baird became interested in the relationship between individuality and collective form. She is equally drawn to Martha Graham‘s description of dancers as 'athletes of God,' each carrying unique strengths, vulnerabilities, and capacities for expression.
