Silent Horror Fest, Night One - Haxan / Phantom of the Opera
Night one of a silent horror showcase pairs two landmark films with live piano by Cliff Retallick. The program opens with Haxan (1922), a blend of lecture and dramatization that follows ideas about witchcraft from ancient times into the modern era.
Using staged reenactments and striking imagery, it moves through scenes of pagan observance, satanic ceremonies, and waves of hysteria. The feature that follows is The Phantom of the Opera (1925), set at the Paris Opera, where a masked phantom threatens the celebrated Carlotta and compels her to surrender the role of Marguerite in Faust to Christine Daaé.
Christine encounters him in the catacombs where he lives, while his purpose and secret remain unresolved.
